Construction to begin on new public transport hub

2 August 2018

Townsville’s public transport is set to be enhanced, with construction beginning on the new CBD Bus Hub in July. Townsville City Council awarded the contract for the $4 million project to local firm Mendi Construction earlier in the month.

The city has been lacking a central public transport interchange since the redevelopment of the Flinders Street Mall in 2010, with multiple shelters on Sturt Street serving as the CBD hub for the bus network.

The new interchange will be located on Ogden Street, with the investment set to revitalise this part of the CBD with sheltered seating, landscaping and improved pedestrian access, and bring the centre of the network into one convenient and efficient location. Demolition works have already been completed for the project, paving the way for a bus terminus between Ogden and Hanran Streets.

This new location for the CBD hub was selected by the Townsville Chamber of Commerce in 2013 and will allow convenient proximity to the CBD centre of Townsville Bulletin Square and Flinders Street retailers, the Palmer Street hospitality precinct, and the new North Queensland Stadium upon its completion.

The CBD Bus Hub is expected to be completed in February 2019.
