Infrastructure at the centre of Townsville City Council Budget

2 August 2018

Townsville City Council delivered its 2018/19 budget at the end of June, with a focus on infrastructure investment.

The feature of the budget is a record capital spend of $432.5 million, with the largest single project being $159 million for the key Haughton Pipeline Duplication to secure Townsville's water supply. This funding will ensure that the pipeline can be completed before the end of 2019.

Further infrastructure funding includes:

  • $69.2 million towards roads and transport upgrades and renewal;
  • $15.9 million for CBD utilities;
  • $7.6 million for drains and storm water management; and
  • $4.5 million to refurbish Tobruk Pool on the The Strand.

Additionally, the Budget works towards preparing the CBD for the completion of the North Queensland Stadium, with $9 million allocated towards infrastructure upgrades around the Stadium site. This will include landscaping, redesign of adjacent roads and footpaths, and vital infrastructure to ensure that the full precinct is master planned for optimum lifestyle and economic benefit.

Importantly, the Budget also limited increases in property rates to 1.9%, matching the inflation rate.
