Townsville Secured as Carmichael Mine FIFO Hub

2 November 2017

Townsville has been named as one of two hub cities for fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers at Adani’s Carmichael Mine, in a major economic coup for the city.

As part of the agreement, 1,200 FIFO workers will be based in Townsville during the construction phase of the mine, with up to 750 workers then based here for the 30-year operational life of the project. In addition to this, Adani have committed to expanding their Townsville-based headquarters to 150 corporate positions. These jobs are also set to continue for the 30 year lifespan of the project.

Adani’s headquarters, opened in June, has already contributed to a spike in property interest in the city. $150 million in contracts for the project’s key rail link have also been announced, in addition to a contract awarded to the Townsville-based AECOM office for design and surveying work, creating 70 jobs.
